Christoph Walder comes from Toblach (Dobbiaco) in the South Tyrol. He began studying the horn in Innsbruck in 1985 and continued his studies with Hansjörg Angerer at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, before moving to the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna in 1989, where he studied with Roland Berger and Willibald Janeschitz. His in-depth exploration of his instrument’s flexibility took him from historical performance practice on the natural horn to playing in ensembles and chamber music, as well as from improvisation in experimental music and the expansion of sound possibilities through electronics to new playing techniques for the music of our time, which quickly became his main field of expertise.
As a horn player with Klangforum Wien, Christoph Walder has been involved in the realization of many new works since 1993. He has interpreted the solo horn parts in numerous premieres, including Matthias Pintscher’s Sonic Eclipse for horn, trumpet and ensemble, Salvatore Sciarrino’s Perturbazione in arrivo nel settore trombe for horn and orchestra, Nina Šenk’s Flux for horn, trumpet, accordion and strings as well as Jorge E. López’s Symphonie Fleuve for horn and orchestra.
Christoph Walder teaches the horn within the field of new music at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna and as part of Klangforum Wien’s joint professorship at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Graz.
