Christian Fenouillat

Christian Fenouillat studied architecture in Grenoble and began designing for the stage in 1974. His opera designs include Hänsel und GretelLa Cenerentola,  Il barbiere di Siviglia and Il turco in Italia for the Royal Opera House in London; Carmen and Fidelio for the Welsh National Opera in Cardiff; I Capuleti e i Montecchi in Lisbon; Armide and La clemenza di Titofor the Theâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris; WozzeckHamlet,  Der Rosenkavalier and Der Ring des Nibelungen for the Grand Théâtre de Genève; Ariane et Barbe-Bleue and Lucie de Lammermoor for the Opéra de Lyon; Madama Butterfly and Hamlet for the Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona; Gesualdo by Marc-André Dalbavie, Rossini’s Le Comte Ory,  Mosè in Egitto and Otello in Zurich; ToscaFalstaff and Die Zauberflöte in Nantes; Jenůfa at the Spoleto Festival in the USA; Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt MahagonnyLeonoreThe NoseLa traviata and L’Aiglon by Jacques Ibert and Arthur Honegger in Lausanne; L’Amour des trois oranges in Basel; the world premiere of Detlev Glanert’s Solaris at the Bregenz Festival; and Die Zauberflöte at the Vienna State Opera.

For the Salzburg Festival he designed the sets for Giulio Cesare in 2012, for Norma in 2013 and for Iphigénie en Tauride in 2015. His most recent productions also include Maria Stuarda at the Liceu in Barcelona, at Coven Garden, the Warsaw National Opera and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Paisiello’s Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Theater an der Wien,  Giovanna d’Arco at La Scala, Milan, Don Giovanni,  Le nozze di Figaro and L’incoronazione di Poppea in Nantes, and Il trovatore at the Aalto Theatre in Essen.
