Chorus sine nomine

Founded in 1991 by Johannes Hiemetsberger, the Chorus sine nomine covers an immense breadth of repertoire, from Emilio de’ Cavalieri’s Rappresentatione di Anima, et di Corpo to Pierre Boulez’s Le Visage nuptial, from world premieres and specially commissioned pieces to the great works of J. S. Bach, and also including pieces as diverse as Kurt Weill’s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, Sofia Gubaidulina’s Sonnengesang (Canticle of the Sun) and Steve Reich’s The Desert Music. The choir’s in-depth cultivation of a cappella music in all its diversity is demonstrated through numerous first prizes in international choral competitions, such as the European Broadcasting Union’s competition ‘Let the Peoples Sing’, the Spittal an der Drau Choral Competition and the Florilège Vocal de Tours, as well as through various excellent CD recordings.
The Chorus sine nomine and Johannes Hiemetsberger have carried out pioneering long-term work in the development of the choral concert, in particularly with their specially devised thematic and scenic productions such as frost., The power of heaven, tuuli, KAIROS, Happy Birthday, Jesus & Mohammed, Brahms, the Gospel & me, Statements and, in May 2022, Sacrum. The diversity of the choir’s repertoire is reflected in its list of artistic partnerships, including with conductors such as Markus Poschner, HK Gruber, Jordi Savall, Trevor Pinnock, Teodor Currentzis, Martin Haselböck, Andrés Orozco-Estrada and Stefan Gottfried, orchestras such as the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, L’Orfeo Barockorchester, the Wiener Akademie, Concentus Musicus Wien and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, and ensembles such as ALMA and Sarband. The choir has also worked with artists including Roger Vignoles, Michael Krenn, Philipp Blom and Josef Hader both in Europe and on tours to the USA, South America, Taiwan, the Philippines and Singapore.
The Chorus sine nomine is a guest at prestigious events, festivals and venues such as Salzburg Festival, the Styriarte, the Brucknerfest Linz, the Vienna Musikverein, the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Stefaniensaal in Graz. It has also appeared in the Jeunesse – Musikalische Jugend Österreichs concert series, and as a guest at the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore, and, recently, at the Festival Bach de Lausanne.
