Calixto María Schmutter was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1998. After a bachelor’s degree in media and communication at the University of Passau and initial experience in journalism, Calixto María Schmutter has been studying directing at the Mozarteum University Salzburg and the Real Escuela Superior de Artes Dramaticos in Madrid since 2021.
Calixto María Schmutter realised their first independent directorial works such as 70 Kilo Liebe and Nachtasyl GER with the theatre group Spielsucht in Passau. This was followed by performances and scenic projects, above all play developments and rewrites of classical material. Calixto María Schmutter is passionate about exploring themes, discourses and feelings in plays and narratives with the aim of developing accessible projects that also reach a diverse audience. In 2022, they co-directed Mami (wir bluten nur) with Henry Schlage, which was performed as part of Jazz & The City, and in 2023 they created the interactive game show Are You Still Watching? in the Technical Ballroom of the Oldenburg State Theatre. The play development Heidi & the band, which thematises the current moral laws in Iran, was invited to the Südwind Festival 2023.
Calixto María Schmutter also publishes music under the stage name Carlamari. In addition to solo albums such as I, Scramble, they has created theatre music, including 2021 for Blut an meinen Händen directed by Dedi Baron at the Salzburger Landestheater and Floating in my tin can by Hannah Bader and Kasimir und Karoline oder Jugend ohne … directed by Marion Hélène Weber, both of which were invited to the Körber Studio Junge Regie.
