Biography

Benjamin Bruns

Benjamin Bruns began his singing career as an alto soloist with the boys’ choir in his hometown of Hanover. After four years of private singing lessons with Peter Sefcik, he studied at the Academy of Music and Theatre in Hamburg under Kammersngerin Renate Behle.

While still a student, he was offered a permanent contract by the Bremen Theatre, which allowed him to build a broad repertoire at an early stage. This was followed by a similar contract with the Cologne Opera, before working at the Semperoper Dresden and then the Vienna State Opera, where he continues to hold a seasonal contract. He also appears regularly at the Bavarian State Opera, the Teatro Real, Madrid and the Bayreuth Festival.

During the 2017/18 season, Benjamin Bruns made his debuts as Matteo (Arabella) at the Bavarian State Opera, as Loge (Das Rheingold) at the Chemnitz Opera and as Leukippos (Daphne) at the Vienna State Opera.

Oratorio and song recitals are an important facet of Benjamin Bruns’s work, including the great sacred works of Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Mendelssohn. He has sung with renowned ensembles such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Munich Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic, the MDR Symphony Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Leipzig Thomanerchor and the RIAS Chamber Choir, as well as the Choir and Orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome.

Benjamin Bruns has received numerous awards, including at the Federal Singing Competition in Berlin, the Hamburg Mozart Competition and the Schloss Rheinsberg Chamber Opera International Singing Competition. Other special honours include the 2008 Kurt Hbner Prize, awarded by the Bremen Theatre, and the 2009 Young Musicians’ Prize, which was awarded by Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.
