Ayako Kuroki

Bassoonist

The Japanese bassoonist Ayako Kuroki was born in Miyazaki, and began her musical education with piano lessons from the age of six. Following further studies of percussion and horn she changed to bassoon at the age of 15. She studied at the Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai), where she obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.

Immediately after graduating in 2005, she took up the position of principal bassoon with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. A Japanese government scholarship enabled her to study from 2007 at the University of Music and Theatre in Munich with Eberhard Marschall. Upon her return to Japan in 2008 she made a solo appearance performing Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.

Since 2015 she has been a member of the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. From 2021 to 2022 she also undertook a postgraduate degree at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg with Marco Postinghel. She appears regularly as a guest artist with the Munich Philharmonic and Camerata Salzburg.

Alongside her orchestral activity she is a dedicated chamber musician. Together with Philipp Tutzer and Riccardo Terzo she created the Fagott Trio Salzburg (Salzburg Bassoon Trio). This ensemble has already released two CDs, and gives regular acclaimed tours in Japan.
