Augustin Muller initially studied classical percussion, jazz and improvisation, before training as a sound engineer at the Paris Conservatoire. He works as a sound director and music information specialist at IRCAM with numerous ensembles such as Le Balcon, the Ensemble intercontemporain, L’Instant Donné, the International Contemporary Ensemble and the Geneva Chamber Orchestra. He has also worked with composers and artists such as Michaël Lévinas, Robert HP Platz, Juan Pablo Carreño and Henry Fourès. Together with Pedro García-Velásquez he explores the concepts of acoustic imprints and sonic memories of specific places.
He works as a sound engineer and interpreter of music for traditional instruments and tape or live electronics for concerts and research projects at festivals such as Manifeste, the Venice Biennale, the Festival Musica in Strasbourg and the Festival Berlioz.
Since 2008 he has been a member of the ensemble Le Balcon, working on the electronics for compositions by Boulez, Lévinas and Stockhausen. He is especially interested in the interpretation and transmission of works with electronics, and in exploring the connections between notation and sonic spatialization.
In 2017 he was involved in the arrangement of Pierre Henry’s Dracula, ou la musique troue le ciel for mixed ensemble with live electronics. In autumn 2024 he and Le Balcon presented C’est toi qui donnes le son at the Musée du quai Branly — Jacques Chirac.
