Anthony León
Tenor

The Cuban-Colombian tenor Anthony León was born in the USA and has performed at the Los Angeles Opera, Santa Fe Opera, the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Victoria Hall in Geneva and the Arsenal in Metz. He has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival and with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl under Gustavo Dudamel, and participated in the Salzburg Festival’s Young Singers Project 2023.
In the 2022/23 season he was a member of the Young Artists Programme (YAP) of the Los Angeles Opera, where he appeared as Normanno (Lucia di Lammermoor), Spoletta (Tosca), Male Chorus (The Rape of Lucretia), Don Curzio (Le nozze di Figaro), Roderigo (Otello) and Pelléas in the YAP production Impressions of Pelléas. In the 2023/24 season he performed in Gabriela Lena Frank’s El último sueño de Frida y Diego and made his role debut as Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni). He also sang The Consumer in the world premiere of Ellen Reid’s The Shell Trial at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, Nadir (Les Pêcheurs de perles) at the Cologne Opera and Telemaco in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Highlights of the 2024/25 season included Ferrando (Così fan tutte) at the Los Angeles Opera and Nadir under Giedrė Šlekytė in his house debut at the Berlin State Opera.
He sang Giove and Anfinomo in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria with the ensemble I Gemelli under Emiliano Gonzalez Toro on tour and on a subsequent recording released in September 2023.
Anthony León studied at the La Sierra University in California and at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston with Bradley Williams. He is a recipient of some of the most prestigious awards. In 2022 he won the first prize and the Zarzuela Prize Don Plácido Domingo in the Operalia Competition, and was also a winner of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (Los Angeles District). He has also received a grant from the Sullivan Foundation, was a finalist at the International Opera Awards 2024 and was the recipient of the Richard Tucker Career Grant 2024 and the Eva and Marc Stern Artist Award 2025 from LA Opera.
