The British mezzo-soprano Anita Monserrat has made a name for herself as one of the most exciting young singers of her generation. She has won prizes at several major international singing competitions, including first prize at the 2024 SWR Kultur Junge Opernstars competition and second prize at the 2024 Neue Stimmen competition, and in 2023 was a semi-finalist at Plácido Domingo’s Operalia competition. In the UK she was a finalist in the 2023 Kathleen Ferrier Awards and at the 2022 Handel Singing Competition. In 2023 she participated in the Young Singers Project of the Salzburg Festival, where she appeared in a children’s version of Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges. In 2024 she participated in the Internationale Meistersinger Akademie (IMA).
Anita Monserrat studied at the University of Cambridge, the Royal Academy of Music in London and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. During her studies in Vienna, she appeared as Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel) and in Poulenc’s monodrama La Voix humaine.
In the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons she held the Hildegard Zadek Scholarship as a member of the Opera Studio of the Vienna State Opera, where she sang roles such as Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Mercédès (Carmen), Lola (Cavalleria rusticana), Kate Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) and Laura (Iolanta). In February 2026 she made her role debut as Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro) with the Cologne Opera.
Her past concert engagements have included solos in the gala Christmas in Vienna at the Vienna Konzerthaus, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra under Hans Graf, Bach’s St John Passion with the Britten Sinfonia under Philippe Herreweghe at the Barbican Centre in London, Handel’s Messiah under Laurence Cummings at the London Handel Festival and Vivaldi’s Gloria with the Academy of Ancient Music. Recent highlights have also included Messiah at the Vienna Musikverein, the gala Opern Air to celebrate the opening of the 2025/26 season of the Vienna State Opera, a concert with Concentus Musicus Wien under Stefan Gottfried at the International Baroque Days at Melk Abbey and a gala concert at Carnegie Hall in New York.
Following Anita Monserrat’s return to the Salzburg Festival as Mercédès, her engagements will include Spirit (Dido and Aeneas) in Pisa and Livorno, the alto solos in Bach’s Christmas Oratorio at the Tyrolean Festival Erl and Angelina (La Cenerentola) for the Boston Youth Opera.
