Andrew Morstein

At the beginning of 2023 the American tenor Andrew Morstein sang the role of Leonard Lev in a concert performance and recording of Tobias Picker’s acclaimed opera Awakenings with the Boston Modern Opera Project and Odyssey Opera.
In the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons Andrew Morstein was a member of the Young Ensemble of the Theater an der Wien. There he sang roles including Count Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Spoletta in Martin Kušej’s production of Tosca, Camille in Tobias Picker’s Thérèse Raquin, Officer I and Sandy in Peter Maxwell Davies’s The Lighthouse, Georg in a concert performance of Lortzing’s Der Waffenschmied, Klas in Ottmar Gerster’s Enoch Arden, Andronico in Vivaldi’s Bajazet and the Amalekite in Claus Guth’s staging of Handel’s oratorio Saul, recorded and broadcast by the Austrian Broadcasting Company (ORF). He also performed in an evening of Russian songs at the Vienna Kammeroper. Previous career highlights included Telemachus and City Man in Patrick Morganelli’s Hercules vs. Vampires at the Nashville Opera and Don Ramiro (La Cenerentola) at the Opera Neo in San Diego.
During his studies at Northwestern University Andrew Morstein appeared as Peter Quint (The Turn of the Screw), Tom Rakewell (The Rake’s Progress), Bénédict (Béatrice et Bénédict) and Alfred (Die Fledermaus). His concert appearances included Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Janáček’s The Diary of One Who Disappeared.
Andrew Morstein is the winner of a Metropolitan Opera National Council Encouragement Award. He was a finalist in the International Vocal Competition of the New York International Opera Auditions (NYIOP) and the Premiere Opera Foundation, and won the audience prize at the Camille Coloratura Awards, along with prizes at the Edward M. Murray International Competition of Voice and at the Kyrenia Opera Vocal Competition in Cyprus.
