Andreas Großbauer was born in 1974 in Graz and received his first violin lessons at the age of five. At the age of just twelve he was admitted into the gifted students’ programme at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, where he studied with Christos Polyzoides. After completing his secondary education, he fulfilled his military service in the Gardemusik Wien (Guards’ Band Vienna) and then continued his studies with Alfred Staar.
In 1999 he performed for the first time as a substitute in the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and with the Vienna Philharmonic. In 2001 he joined the first violin section of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, before moving to the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera in 2005, following a successful audition. Since 2007 he has been a full member of the Vienna Philharmonic.
Alongside his activity as an orchestral musician, he has a deep love of chamber music. His important chamber-music experiences have included work with ensembles such as Philharmonia Schrammeln Wien, the Vienna Chamber Ensemble and the Toyota Master Players. He is the initiator of the project Philharmonic Taste, which brings together music, wine and culture in a unique dialogue of the senses.
From 2014 to 2017 Andreas Großbauer was a member of the Executive Board of the Vienna Philharmonic. As ‘Ball Director’ he shaped the artistic direction of the Vienna Philharmonic’s traditional ball for seven years, and initiated various projects that included international cultural and youth initiatives.
Andreas Großbauer plays a violin by Jean-Baptiste Villaume from the collection of the Vienna Philharmonic, formerly played by the orchestra’s long-serving concert master Walter Barylli.
