Alexander Lonquich

In 1977 Alexander Lonquich won first prize at the Casagrande Competition. Since then, he has given concerts in all the world’s main musical centres and collaborated with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Ton Koopman, Emmanuel Krivine, Heinz Holliger and Sándor Végh.
In 2003 Alexander Lonquich and his wife Cristina Barbuti established a piano duo, appearing together in Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Norway and the USA. In 2013 he and his wife created Kantoratelier, a theatrical space for the study and development of psychology, music and theatre through workshops, seminars and concerts. Since 2014, he has been principal conductor of Orchestra del Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza. Since July 2020 he has been artistic director of the Fondazione Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.
As a chamber musician, Alexander Lonquich collaborates regularly with such esteemed partners as Nicolas Altstaedt, Vilde Frang, Joshua Bell, Isabelle Faust, Carolin Widmann and Jörg Widmann. He has received numerous awards from both the Italian and international press, including the Diapason d’Or and the Premio Abbiati for best soloist in 2016.
As a conductor and soloist, he has performed with the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the German Chamber Philharmonic, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, the Filarmonica della Scala in Milan, the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale RAI in Turin and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Other recent engagements include collaborations with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the Munich Chamber Orchestra and Camerata Salzburg, as well as appearances at the International Piano Festival in Brescia and Bergamo. He is also a regular guest at internationally renowned festivals such as the Schubertiade, Lockenhaus and Mozartwoche Festivals in Austria and the Beethovenfest Bonn and the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival in Germany.
Alexander Lonquich has an extensive discography. His most recent album in collaboration with Nicolas Altstaedt was released in 2020 on Alpha Classics and features all of Beethoven’s cello sonatas and variations. Schubert 1828, his disc for the Alpha-Outhere label featuring the composer’s final three piano sonatas, was released in October 2018 and awarded the German Record Critics’ Prize the following year.
