Alexander Ekman, born in 1984, is a graduate of the Royal Swedish Ballet Academy and is certainly one of the most exceptional choreographers of our time. There is hardly a renowned company in the world that has not already performed his pieces. The Paris Opera, the Royal Swedish Ballet, the Netherlands Dans Theater, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Boston Ballet, the Dresden Semperoper … to name but a few.
Since 2010, Alexander Ekman’s “Cacti” has been shown repeatedly at the Dortmund Theatre. A play about cacti that has already travelled the world and is something very special in many ways. Alexander Ekman also designed the stage set for this play, which has won several awards.
Ekman began his dance career at the age of 16. By the age of 21, he had already decided to become a choreographer. His choreographic language is certainly also characterised by his dance career. He was a dancer with the Royal Swedish Ballet, the Cullberg Ballet and the Netherlands Dans Theater.
The Netherlands Dans Theater is regarded as a great creative hotbed. And the Cullberg Ballet was also the choreographic home of Mats Ek – another exceptional choreographer of recent times.
Alexander Ekman thinks unconventionally and as crazy as possible. In Oslo, he flooded the entire stage with 6,000 litres of water to stage – in the truest sense of the word – a Swan Lake.
He is also constantly on the move in the field of dance film. He has also made a film about Midsummer Night’s Dream, which has won several awards.
