Albert Dohmen
Bass
The German bass Albert Dohmen can look back on a long international career, the first highlight of which was his Wozzeck at the Salzburg Easter and Summer Festivals in 1997 with (respectively) the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, conducted by Claudio Abbado and in a production by Peter Stein. He went on to work with leading conductors such as James Levine, Kurt Masur, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Georges Prêtre, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Christian Thielemann and Claudio Abbado.
He has performed the great heroic baritone roles such as Kurwenal, Pizarro, Amfortas, the Dutchman, Scarpia, Bluebeard and Hans Sachs at major international opera houses such as the Paris Opéra, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Bavarian and Vienna State Operas, the Zurich Opera House, the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and the Los Angeles Opera. He made his debut at New York’s Metropolitan Opera as Jochanaan (Salome).
He has also established himself as one of the leading Wotans of his generation. He has sung this role in complete Ring cycles in Trieste, Geneva, Catania, Amsterdam, and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, among others.
In 2007 Albert Dohmen made his Bayreuth Festival debut as Wotan / Wanderer (Der Ring des Nibelungen). From 2015 to 2018 he sang Alberich there, and, after shifting voice type, sang the roles of Hagen (Götterdämmerung) and Landgraf Hermann (Tannhäuser) in 2022.
Other important appearances have included Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) in Geneva and Barcelona, Barak (Die Frau ohne Schatten) in Florence, Orest (Elektra) in Baden-Baden, Jochanaan (Salome) in Amsterdam, Falstaff in Stuttgart, the Commendatore (Don Giovanni) in Vienna, Music Master (Ariadne auf Naxos) in Hamburg and Kaspar (Der Freischütz) at the Semperoper Dresden.
Wagner highlights in the bass repertory have included Gurnemanz (Parsifal) in Geneva and under Josep Pons in the original location of the monastery of Montserrat, Daland (Der fliegende Holländer) in Trieste, Luxembourg and Brussels, King Marke (Tristan und Isolde) in Vienna, Barcelona, Bologna and Auckland, Pogner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) at La Scala, Milan, Hunding (Die Walküre) at the Budapest Wagner Days and Hagen (Götterdämmerung) in Budapest, London and Vienna.
