Thomas Wilhelm

Thomas Wilhelm trained as a dancer at the Palucca School in Dresden. He subsequently worked at the Dresden State Opera, the Gothenburg Opera and Stephan Thoss’s company, as well as at the Hanover State Theatre. He has been a freelance choreographer since 2006, during which time he has been particularly closely associated with Christof Loy, working with him on opera productions in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Gothenburg, Stockholm, Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Hamburg, Frankfurt and elsewhere, as well as the Bavarian State Opera, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Their last work together, Britten’s Peter Grimes at the Theater an der Wien, was named best new production at the 2015 International Opera Awards.

At the Salzburg Festival Thomas Wilhelm has worked as movement director on Loy’s productions of Theodora (2009) and Die Frau ohne Schatten (2011) and on Shirin Neshat’s production of Aida (2017). He has also worked with Nadja Loschky, most recently on L’incoronazione di Poppea and La traviata at the Bielefeld Theatre, and to date has choreographed two of Amélie Niermeyer’s productions: Rossini’s Elisabetta, regina d’Inghilterra at the Theater an der Wien and, in the autumn of 2018, Verdi’s Otello at the Bavarian State Opera. Alcina marks his first collaboration with Damiano Michieletto.
