Sophie von Kessel is among the leading actresses in contemporary German-speaking theatre and film. Trained at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and at the Juilliard School in New York, she quickly established herself at renowned venues such as the Munich Kammerspiele, the Residenztheater and the Burgtheater, appearing in numerous major productions including among others The doctor, Macbeth, Phädra, Noises off, Iwanow and The cherry orchard. In 2008 she appeared at the Salzburg Festival in Everyman as the Beloved.
Alongside her extensive stage work, she is a prominent presence in national and international film and television, with roles in major productions such as among others Tatort, Nach uns der Rest der Welt, Das Mädchen am Strand, Frank Riva, Das Verhör in der Nacht and Brandnächte. For her leading role in the film Lebendig, she received Best Actress awards at the New Renaissance Film Festival Amsterdam and the ReelHeART Festival Toronto in 2020.
With her precise character work, strong stage presence and wide stylistic range, Sophie von Kessel brings artistic intensity and contemporary expression to her performances, shaping German-language theatre and screen for many years.
