Matthias Schorn

Clarinettist Matthias Schorn was born in Hallein, and is an extremely versatile musician, with a wide range of interests. Since 2007 he has been a member of the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and since 2010 he has been a member of the Vienna Philharmonic.
As a soloist he has performed with renowned orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, the NDR Radio Philharmonic, the Rheinland-Pfalz State Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lucerne Festival Strings, the Kremerata Baltica, the Bruckner Orchestra in Linz, the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg, the London Mozart Players and the Munich Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of noted conductors including Lorin Maazel, Christian Thielemann, Gustavo Dudamel, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Kristjan Järvi, Michael Sanderling, Iván Fischer, Hans Graf, HK Gruber and Dennis Russell Davies.
His chamber music partners include Annette Dasch, Martin Grubinger, Wu Han, Christopher Hinterhuber, Raphael Wallfisch, Ernst Kovacic, Daniel Hope, Kit Armstrong, Benjamin Schmid, Daniel Müller-Schott, Gábor Boldoczki, Maximilian Hornung, Nicolas Altstaedt, Harriet Krijgh, Nils Mönkemeyer, Alice Sara Ott, Vilde Frang, Clemens Hagen, Julia Hagen, Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, Dominik Wagner, Oliver Triendl, Veronika Eberle, Viviane Hagner, Christian Altenburger, Igor Levit and Christoph Eschenbach, and ensembles such as the Armida Quartet, the Danish String Quartet, the SIGNUM saxophone quartet, the Minetti Quartet, the Vogler Quartet, the Apollon Musagète Quartet, the Fauré Quartet and Quatuor Ébène.
As the founder of the festival PalmKlang and of the ensemble Faltenradio, and as a resident artist (including artist in residence at the Mecklenburg Vorpommern Festival 2013, artistic director of the Rügen Spring Festival 2018 and featured artist at BASF Ludwigshafen 2018) he regularly devises new and exciting creative projects. In his adopted homeland of the Triestingtal Valley in Lower Austria he keeps bees as a hobby, and has carried out various artistic projects, including the restoration of the abandoned Altenmarkt-Thenneberg railway station, and setting up a small performing venue with an accompanying recording studio, small café and accommodation for pilgrims.
Matthias Schorn teaches at the Music and Arts Private University of Vienna, gives masterclasses worldwide and works as a columnist for various specialist journals.
