Luc Mangholz was born in 1995 in France, and has been principal flute of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera since 2019. Previously he was principal flute of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in Hamburg. Other engagements as principal flute have taken him to perform with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra and the Orchestre National de France.
He trained with musicians including Andrea Lieberknecht, Philippe Bernold, Florence Souchard, Michel Moraguès, Vincent Lucas, Claude Lefebvre and Stéphanie Kandiak. During his studies he gained experience performing in various youth orchestras in Paris and Munich, in the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and later in the Orchestral Academy of the Bavarian State Orchestra. Luc Mangholz has worked with conductors including Kirill Petrenko, Christian Thielemann, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim, Franz Welser-Möst and Herbert Blomstedt.
Luc Mangholz is especially concerned with the training of young musicians, and has taught at the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Academy and at the Angelika Prokopp Summer Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic. He has also given masterclasses in Klagenfurt and at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
