Ferdinand Steiner

Ferdinand Steiner is principal clarinettist of the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg and active internationally as a chamber musician and soloist. He studied at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna with Peter Schmidl, Ernst Ottensamer and Johann Hindler, followed by postgraduate studies with Alois Brandhofer at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.

Ferdinand Steiner is a regular guest clarinettist with renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the German Symphony Orchestra in Berlin, the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne, the Munich Radio Orchestra and Camerata Salzburg, working with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Bernard Haitink, Franz Welser-Möst, Kirill Petrenko, Neville Marriner, Roger Norrington and Giuseppe Sinopoli. During his studies in Vienna, he worked as a temporary assistant with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.

His solo appearances with ensembles such as the Mozarteum Orchestra, the Salzburg Orchestra Soloists and the Stuttgart Philharmonic have taken him to the Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg, the Brucknerhaus in Linz, the Stefaniensaal in Graz, the Philharmonie am Gasteig in Munich, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt and the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch, as well as the Granship in Shizuoka and the Suntory Hall in Tokyo.

As a soloist and chamber musician, Ferdinand Steiner is a regular guest at various international festivals. His musical partners include many renowned instrumentalists, as well as singers such as Cecilia Bartoli, Annette Dasch, Bernarda Fink and Malin Hartelius.

Ferdinand Steiner is a founding member of the Salzburg Orchestra Soloists. He also plays with his sister Judith (violin) and brother Andreas (percussion) in the Steiner Quintet Salzburg. As a jazz musician, he appears with the Ferdinand Steiner Electric Band.

Ferdinand Steiner has released recordings for labels such as Classic Concert Records, Extraplatte and MLT Classics. His recording of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto was included in the ‘Magic Clarinet’ edition, alongside recordings by Sabine Meyer, Artie Shaw and Larry Combs.

Ferdinand Steiner gives masterclasses annually in Japan and South Africa.
