The Uruguayan tenor Edgardo Rocha is one of today’s leading interpreters of bel canto. Since his European debut in the title role of Donizetti’s Gianni di Parigi at the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca, he has appeared regularly at the most important opera houses and renowned festivals worldwide.
In the 2025/26 season Edgardo Rocha has made his role debut as Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore) in Gießen, going on to win acclaim in this role at the Vienna State Opera. In concert he has sung in Mozart’s Mass in C minor with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Thomas Søndergård. Other recent highlights have included Florestano in Ferdinando Paër’s rarely performed opera Leonora at the Chicago Opera Theater and the title role of La clemenza di Tito at the Salzburg Mozartwoche in 2024 and at the Washington Concert Opera.
Two cornerstones of Edgardo Rocha’s repertory are the principal tenor roles in Rossini’s La Cenerentola and Il barbiere di Siviglia. He has sung Don Ramiro at venues including the Vienna State Opera, in Geneva, Seattle and Monte Carlo, at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and on a world tour with Cecilia Bartoli. As Count Almaviva he has appeared at venues including the Vienna State Opera, the Paris Opéra, the Bavarian State Opera and the opera houses of Los Angeles, Madrid, Valencia, Dresden, Zurich and Naples; he also sang this role at the 2022 Salzburg Festival and on a tour of Switzerland with the Opéra de Monte-Carlo.
At the Vienna State Opera, in addition to Ramiro and Almaviva he has also sung Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Ferrando (Così fan tutte), Ernesto (Don Pasquale) and Lindoro (L’italiana in Algeri). At the Grand Théâtre de Genève he participated in Donizetti’s Tudor trilogy, singing the title role of Roberto Devereux, Percy (Anna Bolena) and Leicester (Maria Stuarda). Other past Donizetti interpretations include Ernesto in Florence, Rome and Verona, Percy in Lausanne and the title role of Gianni di Parigi at the Wexford Festival Opera.
Edgardo Rocha’s past roles for the Zurich Opera House have included Rossini’s Lindoro, Comte Ory, Belfiore (Il viaggio a Reims), Don Narciso (Il turco in Italia) and Almaviva, along with Gérald in Delibes’ Lakmé. Performance highlights in bel canto and French repertory have also included Don Narciso at La Scala, Milan, in Turin and Madrid, Belfiore in Dresden and Moscow, Giacomo V (La donna del lago) at the 2017 Salzburg Whitsun Festival and in Marseille, Lindoro in Barcelona and at the 2018 Salzburg Festival, Elvino (La sonnambula) in Nice and Düsseldorf, Arturo (I puritani) in Stuttgart, Nadir (Les Pêcheurs de perles) in Nancy, Lyonel in Halévy’s L’Éclair in Geneva and Léopold (La Juive) at the Bavarian State Opera.
