Anna Viebrock

Anna Viebrock studied stage design with Karl Kneidel at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Her collaboration with Christoph Marthaler has led her to work at numerous theatres and opera houses, among them Theater Basel, the Volksbühne on Rosa Luxemburg Platz in Berlin, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, the Frankfurt Opera, the Paris Opéra, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Hamburg State Opera, and the Schauspielhaus Zurich, where she was part of the managerial team until summer 2004. She has also worked with Marthaler at festivals such as the Bayreuth Festival (Tristan und Isolde), the Wiener Festwochen, the Festival d’Avignon, the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels, and many times at the Salzburg Festival (Pierrot lunaire / Quatuor pour la fin du temps, Káťa Kabanová, Zur schönen Aussicht, Twelfth Night, Le nozze di Figaro and The Makropulos Affair).
Since 1994 she has also worked regularly with the directorial team of Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito, designing sets and costumes for them for productions at the Salzburg Festival, Theater Basel, the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, the Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Stuttgart State Opera, among other venues. Her own work as a director has taken her to the Hanover State Opera, the Paris Opéra, the Schwetzingen Festival, HAU in Berlin, the Schauspielhaus in Zurich, Theater Basel, the Schauspiel in Cologne and the National Theatre in Manheim.
In 2017 she created the exhibition The Boat is Leaking. The Captain Lied. at the Fondazione Prada in Venice, in collaboration with Alexander Kluge, Thomas Demand and the curator Udo Kittelmann. Exhibitions of her stage design models have taken place in Rotterdam, Prague, Frankfurt am Main, Madrid, Brussels, Ghent, Avignon, Helsinki, Basel and Gießen.
Anna Viebrock has been awarded the titles ‘Set Designer of the Year’ and ‘Costume Designer of the Year’ 17 times. In 1997 the state of Hesse awarded her with the Hessian Culture Prize. In 2004 she won the Berlin Theatre Prize, in 2013 she won the Hein Heckroth Stage Design Prize and in 2015 she was awarded the Zurich Festival Prize. From 2013 to 2021 Anna Viebrock was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
