Andrea Giovannini

Italian tenor Andrea Giovannini studied at the Scuola di Teatro di Bologna and for a number of years worked as an actor before training as a singer. He made his role debut as Danilo (Die lustige Witwe) under Massimo de Bernart and then worked on Mozart’s great tenor roles with Claudio Desderi: he has sung Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Don Basilio (Le nozze di Figaro) and Ferrando (Così fan tutte) in numerous productions, including Giorgio Strehler’s legendary staging at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan. He has also specialized in Rossini’s tenor roles and has sung Count Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia) under Desderi at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo and Idreno (Semiramide) under Gianluigi Gelmetti for the Rome Opera. Since 2006 he has expanded his repertoire and added roles that include Fenton (Falstaff) for Grange Park Opera, Rodolfo (La bohème) in Dublin, Alfredo (La traviata) in Nuremberg, Dijon and at the Festival de Saint-Céré and the Conte di Bosco Nero in Wolf-Ferrari’s La vedova scaltra in Nice. Other engagements have included Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi) in Modena, Camille de Rosillon (Die lustige Witwe) in Rome and Naples, Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) in Dijon, Rodolfo, Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) and Carlos Medina in Francis López’s La Belle de Cadix in Massy, Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore) for Opera Zuid, Carlo VII (Giovanna d’Arco) with the Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra, Verdi’s Requiem with the Brabant Orchestra in Eindhoven and in Poznań, the Dancing Master (Manon Lescaut) under Riccardo Muti in Rome, Edmondo (Manon Lescaut) and Mitrane (Semiramide) under Bruno Campanella in Florence, Goro (Madama Butterfly) in Naples, Parma and with Turin’s Teatro Regio on a visit to Savonlinna, Prunier (La rondine) in Lucca, Pisa, Livorno, Modena, Ravenna, Moscow and Catania, Edmondo at the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona, Nino in the world premiere of Gianni Bella’s La capinera in Catania, Flavio (Norma) and Girolamo in Paër’s Agnese in Turin and Action (West Side Story) with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Antonio Pappano in Rome.

Andrea Giovannini has been a member of the Vienna State Opera since 2020. His most recent roles for the company have included Bardolfo (Falstaff), Spoletta (Tosca), Don Curzio (Le nozze di Figaro), Goro, the Abbé of Chazeuil (Adriana Lecouvreur) and the Holy Fool (Boris Godunov).
