Abraham Cupeiro, a builder and multi-instrumentalist specializing in ancestral instruments, is renowned for recovering lost instruments and using them to create new sounds, integrating them into musical contexts where they have never been used before. He studied trumpet at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid (RCSMM) and completed a master’s degree in Early Music at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. His classical training contrasts with his versatility, having participated in folk, jazz, and early music projects.
He is one of the few performers of the karnyx, a Celtic trumpet from the Iron Age. Additionally, he has revived the corna, a traditional Galician instrument once played by his grandfather and depicted in the illuminations of Alfonso X. His passion for organology has led him to build a collection of over 200 instruments, which he showcases in his performance Resonando en el Pasado (“Resonating in the Past”).
His discography begins with Os Sons Esquecidos (The Forgotten Sounds, Warner Classics, 2017), recorded with the Real Filharmonía de Galicia. He later released Pangea (Warner Classics, 2020) with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and followed with his latest album, Mythos (Loira Records, 2024). Both albums were recorded at Abbey Road Studios, and his latest release Loira (2025), an album with diverse themes, featuring pieces that move from euphoria to nostalgia, and songs that had remained forgotten in a drawer for years.
Cupeiro has performed with renowned national and international orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfónica de Galicia, Real Filharmonía de Galicia, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao, Orchestre National de Bretagne, Kymi Sinfonietta, and Vaasa City Orchestra. He was also invited by violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja to collaborate on the project Les Adieux.
In cinema, he worked with Ridley Scott on Gladiator II and participated in two major Netflix productions: Our Planet (2023), directed by Steven Spielberg, and the biblical thriller Mary, starring Anthony Hopkins, where he performed on 25 different instruments. Additionally, he composed the soundtrack for María Solinha and collaborates with Hans Zimmer’s 14th Street Music.
Cupeiro also excels in scientific outreach projects such as Neuston 3 and in fashion performances with Adolfo Domínguez, solidifying his position as a multifaceted and innovative artist.
