Salzburg Festival 1920 Jedermann at the cathedral square

History

The Salzburg Festival was founded on August 22, 1920, when Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s morality play Jedermann, directed by Max Reinhardt, was performed for the first time on the Domplatz. Since then, the Salzburg Festival has established itself as the most significant festival for opera, drama and concerts.

The Salzburg Festival Archive is one of the most extensive surviving theater archives in Austria. A hybrid of archive, collection and library, it now houses numerous documents relating to the Festival’s history. It is constantly being expanded with archival materials of all kinds; you can find the current inventory overview here.

Latest projects

Parallel to the opening of the archive from February 7 to 10, 2024, the highly acclaimed FAUST 2023 Project, which arose from the idea of a living archive, was resumed. In performative guided tours, the legendary Faust city was brought back to life in a virtual reality recreation on the Felsenreitschule stage, among other things. Read more about FAUST 2023.

FAUST 2023 Project

From 15 February 2024, the Salzburg Festival Archive will be open to the public at its new location in Neutorstrasse 25 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visits by groups and/or individuals can also be booked at other times by prior arrangement.
