Erwin Schrott

The Uruguayan bass-baritone Erwin Schrott sings at the world’s leading opera houses, including La Scala, Milan, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, the Paris Opéra, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Washington National Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence, the Hamburg State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Monnaie in Brussels and the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa.

He has had great international success in the title role of Don Giovanni, which he has sung in London, Milan, Florence, Washington, Los Angeles, Seville, Turin, New York and Shanghai among other cities. His repertory also includes parts such as Figaro and Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore), Escamillo (Carmen), Méphistophélès in both Berlioz and Gounod’s operatic versions of the Faust story, the title roles in Boito’s Mefistofele and Verdi’s Attila, Banco (Macbeth), Procida (Les Vêpres siciliennes), Pagano (I Lombardi alla prima crociata) and the four villains (Les Contes d’Hoffmann). In 2017 he made his role debut as Scarpia (Tosca) at the Berlin State Opera.

Appearances in the 2023/24 season include Escamillo at the Bavarian State Opera, Scarpia at the Berlin State Opera, Selim (Il turco in Italia) in Buenos Aires and Les Contes d’Hoffmann in Liège. He also returns to the Vienna State Opera for I vespri siciliani and Tosca. Recent highlights have included La Gioconda at La Scala, Milan, L’elisir d’amore in Orange, Macbeth in Barcelona, Carmen in Vienna and Verona and Les Contes d’Hoffmann in Hamburg. He made his Salzburg Festival debut in 2008 as Leporello (Don Giovanni) and most recently appeared at the Festival in 2022 as Ramfis (Aida).

Erwin Schrott is an exclusive artist with Sony Classical, with which label he has released the solo album Arias and the album Rojotango, which won an ECHO Klassik in 2012. In 1998 he won first prize at Plácido Domingo’s renowned singing competition Operalia. In addition to his singing activities, Erwin Schrott is involved in several charities that help children in need.
