Once again, the interest in the award has been enormous. 65 candidates from 5 continents and 31 countries applied for Award, which has become one of the most sought-after international distinctions for young conductors all over the world. Rüdiger Safranski to give Keynote Address at the 2015 Festival Opening

Rüdiger Safranski will deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 2015 Salzburg Festival on Sunday, July 26. “Rüdiger Safranski is the ideal opening speaker for a cultural event which radiates throughout the entire world, but is clearly rooted in European intellectual history,” declared Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler today, Wednesday, March 4.

Plácido Domingo • Gala Concert Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of his Salzburg Debut

Plácido Domingo has decided to retire the role of Conte di Luna from his repertoire and has therefore cancelled all respective performances in Berlin, Milan and Salzburg. Fortunately, it will still be possible to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Plácido Domingo’s Salzburg debut with a gala concert at the Festival.

Festival President’s 20-Year Anniversary in Office

Today, Helga Rabl-Stadler has held the office of President of the Salzburg Festival for exactly 20 years. Her current contract runs until the end of 2017, and in her last year she will share the running of the Salzburg Festival with the designated Artistic Director Markus Hinterhäuser, who begins his tenure in 2016/17. Until then, she will lead the Festival together with the Director of Drama, Sven-Eric Bechtolf, on an interim basis.

Grigory Sokolov chooses solo recital at the Salzburg Festival for his new live album

International Release:
January 19, 2015 will see the worldwide release of Grigory Sokolov’s recital featuring works by Mozart and Chopin, which was recorded at the Salzburg Festival in 2008 and is being released by DGG as part of the SALZBURG FESTIVAL DOCUMENTS edition. It is the first concert the pianist has permitted to be published in more than 20 years, having signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon this past October.

PETER KONWITSCHNY to direct Die Eroberung von Mexico, replacing LUC BONDY

The Salzburg Festival regrets to announce that Luc Bondy finds himself unable to direct the production of Wolfgang Rihm’s Die Eroberung von Mexico for reasons of scheduling as well as personal ones. At the same time, we are happy to announce that we have been able to convince Peter Konwitschny to take on this production as director.
