The Salzburg Festival announces with regret that Bruno Ganz has been forced to cancel his participation in the new production of Die Zauberflöte for reasons of health. He had already begun the rehearsal process, bringing his characteristic empathy to this important Festival premiere, but has been advised by his doctors to commence treatment immediately.

The Salzburg Festival wishes Bruno Ganz all the best for a speedy recovery.

Furthermore, the Festival is delighted to announce that it has found another world star for the part of the Narrator in Die Zauberflöte: Klaus Maria Brandauer has agreed to take on this role.

Bruno Ganz said: “I am very sorry to leave the production of Die Zauberflöte for health reasons, and very grateful to my colleague Klaus Maria Brandauer for taking over at such short notice.”

With Klaus Maria Brandauer, an experienced protagonist returns to the Festival stage. He made his Salzburg debut in 1970, was widely acclaimed for his masterful portrayal of Jedermann from 1983 to 1989, and triumphed in the title role of Oedipus at Colonus in 2010.
