Triumph of the Salzburg Festival in US Press

Mark Swed/LOS ANGELES TIMES chooses the Salzburg Festival as Festival of the year: “The once-glorious is glorious again under the new leadership of the pianist Markus Hinterhäuser, and nothing proved that more than Peter Sellars’ new production of Mozart’s last opera, La Clemenza di Tito. It took a hard, long, historical look at the European immigration crisis and featured a phenomenal cast and conductor, the bizarrely, mind-bogglingly vivid Teodor Currentzis, setting new standards for what Mozart opera can look like, sound like and mean.“ Opera artist of the year is South African William Kentridge is “Opera artist of the year” – “he turned a Salzburg Festival stage into a vast video and installation-art World War I canvas in his new production of Berg’s Wozzeck“.

A further medial distinction is granted by Alex Ross/THE NEW YORKER: “Peter Sellars instigated two major new productions this year. Girls of the Golden West, Sellars’s latest collaboration with John Adams, felt like a work in progress, though a major opera should emerge from it. Mozart’s Clemenza, which was seen at the Salzburg Festival, was one of Sellars’s finest, most finished creations – a study in power, betrayal, and compassion, with singers of color dominating the cast.”
