The centrepiece of this year’s Salzburg Whitsun Festival, which takes place under the artistic directorship of Cecilia Bartoli and the motto “Rossinissimo!”, is the opera La Cenerentola. Directed by Damiano Michieletto and conducted by Jean-Christophe Spinosi, the fairy-tale of Cinderella will appear in a new guise on the stage of the Haus für Mozart.
“The secret is an open disposition.” Thus, Cecilia Bartoli describes not only her own approach to the project in hand, but also the way in which director Damiano Michieletto has explored the tale of La Cenerentola. In the June edition of the magazine Bühne, Michieletto has described his approach as follows: “My point is to tell a story, on a level that anyone can understand. A pre-defined a priori is unnecessary. No specific style. No brand. One must let the music influence, inspire, and guide one – both intellectually and emotionally.” To him, there is no question that the production will be a contemporary one.  In this way, he thinks he can better reach a contemporary audience. Furthermore, the director says about La Cenerentola: “I’ve tried to look at the story of Cenerentola in a simple and practical way, while at the same time trying to make it a sort of contemporary tale. The opera is set in a cafeteria where anything may happen, even the most unpredictable things. The people coming here are those who are unable to make ends meet, and the atmosphere is poor and humble. Cinderella dreams of freedom, and of the love that lingers in her imagination.”
The Rossini opera La Cenerentola has its premiere on June 5, 2014 at the Haus für Mozart. A second performance has been scheduled for June 7. At the moment, some remaining tickets are still available at the Salzburg Festival Ticket Office or at http://www.salzburgerfestspiele.at/oper/la-cenerentola-2014. Enjoy!
