Death, Delayed

What would happen if death simply failed to happen? That is exactly what happens in the opera The Makropulos Case. Emilia Marty has been living for more than 300 years – and only now, after such a long time, she feels that life is slowly slipping through her fingers. Leoš Janáček’s opera deals with questions of life and eternal agelessness – literally.

Emilia Marty has an apparently infinite life. But only apparently. This life, which has not felt death for such a long time, is now enmeshed in a story in which the past becomes the present. Our trailer presents scenes from the opera The Makropulos Affair, in which the main protagonists explain the story, the music and their work on the piece. Angela Denoke – the wonderful interpreter of Emilia Marty – is featured alongside Raymond Very and Johan Reuter. They comment upon the story from the perspective of the main characters and offer an emotional and very personal insight into this especially fascinating production of the Salzburg Festival, directed by Christoph Marthaler and under the musical direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen.
