Angela Gheorghiu and Elisabeth Kulman Replace Elīna Garanča

Unfortunately, Elīna Garanča has cancelled her appearances at the Salzburg Festival for this summer, sending the following message:
“Due to personal reasons, I much regret to withdraw from my professional activities until further notice. My mother is suffering from terminal cancer, so I will now stay by her side in Riga. I am very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and ask for your understanding in this difficult time.”

For the new production of “Die Eroberung von Mexico”

The team bringing Wolfgang Rihm’s opera Die Eroberung von Mexico to the Salzburg Festival stage is in the midst of its rehearsals. Therefore, it is an unusual occurrence to find Peter Konwitschny (director), Johannes Leiacker (set and costume designer), Ingo Metzmacher (music director) and Bettina Bartz (the production dramaturge) taking their seats on a podium to answer questions from journalists at such an early stage, three weeks before the premiere.

Back due to Popular Demand: Revivals!

Young Singers Project 2015

“The role is a good fit” – Golda Schultz as Sophie in Der “Rosenkavalier”

“That’s the Way to Run a Festival!” was the headline of a major Austrian newspaper last year, on the occasion of the premiere of Salzburg’s Rosenkavalier, conducted by Franz Welser-Möst and directed by Harry Kupfer. Thus, there are many reasons to experience Der Rosenkavalier this year at the Großes Festspielhaus. One new element of the production, however, is the South African soprano Golda Schultz, and she alone is worth attending the revival.

“Iphigénie en Tauride” • Musical Delight at Whitsun and during the Summer!

When asked what she finds particularly compelling about the first Gluck role she is to perform on stage, Cecilia Bartoli answers: “On the one hand, it is the precise treatment of the words, or rather the careful balancing of text and music; on the other hand, it is the convincing, human portrayal of a figure who is not a cold Greek statute, but a woman full of doubt and emotion. Compared to Goethe’s Iphigenie, Gluck’s Iphigénie seems more vivid, more passionate, and more rebellious.”

Plácido Domingo • Gala Concert Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of his Salzburg Debut

Plácido Domingo has decided to retire the role of Conte di Luna from his repertoire and has therefore cancelled all respective performances in Berlin, Milan and Salzburg. Fortunately, it will still be possible to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Plácido Domingo’s Salzburg debut with a gala concert at the Festival.
