Lyric coloratura soprano Carina Schmieger was born in Freiburg in 1995 and despite her youth has already acquired considerable stage experience. Even while she was still at school she had begun to perform at the Freiburg Theatre before studying singing with Maria Venuti in Karlsruhe. She completed her studies with a Bachelor’s degree in 2017. While still a student she joined the Opera Studio of the Karlsruhe State Theatre, where her roles included a Greek Woman (Iphigénie en Tauride), an Apparition (Macbeth) and Frasquita (Carmen). Other high points of her career to date have been Drusilla (L’incoronazione di Poppea) at the Karlsruhe Academy of Music and Cupid (Orfeo ed Euridice), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) and the Fairy Godmother in Massenet’s Cendrillon at the Freiburg Theatre.

During the 2017/18 season Carina Schmieger was acclaimed at the Karlsruhe State Theatre as Oberto (Alcina) and as the Bird in Oscar Straus’s operetta Die lustigen Nibelungen. She also took over at short notice the role of the Angel in Peter Eötvös’s Angels in America at the Freiburg Theatre. Plans for 2019 include her debut with the Komische Oper in Berlin as the Cockerel in Attila Kadri Şendil’s children’s opera Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten.

Carina Schmieger has won numerous prizes in international competitions, including several first prizes in the Jugend Musiziert Competition and a special prize at the 2012 Johannes Brahms Competition. In 2014 Opernwelt nominated her as singer and young singer of the year. In 2017 she was a finalist in the International Hilde Zadek Singing Competition, when she also received two special prizes. Since 2010 she has been taught by Helene Schneiderman.
