‘Every art needs two: one who makes it and one who needs it.’ Thus, Ernst Barlach – sculptor, draughtsman and author – described the existential relationship which also characterizes the Salzburg Festival’s essence.
In 2014 the Salzburg Festival once again presents fireworks of artistic illumination: performances by the world’s best conductors, stage directors, singers, musicians, actors and orchestras.
The Salzburg Festival’s Directorate, Helga Rabl-Stadler, Alexander Pereira and Sven-Eric Bechtolf, as well as Cecilia Bartoli, the Artistic Director of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival, have assembled a multitude of new productions of opera and drama classics, numerous world premieres and a diverse concert programme.
As early as February, the Award Concert Weekend (February 28 – March 2) presents outstanding young talents on the conductor’s podium. Whitsun (June 5 – 9) is devoted to the Italian composer Gioachino Rossini. During the summer (July 18 to August 31) the programme ranges from the Ouverture spirituelle to the Festival Ball, from Il trovatore to The Last Days of Humanity, from the first-ever public performances of a Sufi order to the annual highlight of Jedermann. A programme sure to draw and enthral an attractive audience.
