Originally, the space housed the municipal cinema; after a reconstruction of the house at Anton-Neumayr-Platz 2 in 2001, a new "event space” was created, programmatically named republic. The series State of the arts – republic stands for de-provincialization and exterritoriality: this is supposed to be an artistic free space, in which openness, high artistic expectations and diversity are the dominating factors – a space for unconventionality, without borders, open to art, culture and communication. 
 Centrally located in Salzburg's historic center, up to 700 guests can participate in events here, with a telescope stage making various constellations possible: cabaret, readings, theater and dance performances, parties and exhibitions etc. find their audiences here. A computer-controlled light and sound system, continuously variable risers and a stage that can be partially lowered provide the necessary audiovisual support.
