re-rite – Be the Orchestra
A multimedia-based exhibition by the Philharmonia Orchestra and Esa-Pekka Salonen
“re-rite” is wordplay, a witty combination of the English title of Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) and the verb “rewrite”. In this mixture of installation, concert recording and interactive performance, created by the Philharmonia Orchestra and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and bearing the subtitle Be the Orchestra, you will experience a whole new approach to Le Sacre du printemps. At the same time, during this “concert” you go on a virtual tour through the inside of an orchestra, attending one or – if you prefer – several performances of Sacre, depicted in about 30 projections and screens from the perspective of a musician! Hear Sacre anew by sitting down amidst the brass group, by raising the baton, by blending individual instruments in and out at a virtual mixer, or by beating the drum, gong or tambourine yourself at the – hopefully – right moment. With a little bit of luck, you might find a real musician sitting next to you suddenly, playing along.
This exhibition is intended for all lovers of Sacre, for children, but also for an audience un-familiar with classical music: musical knowledge and experience is not necessary – on the contrary!
Anyone who has been inspired by the installation to hear Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps live on stage at the Großes Festspielhaus should attend the ballet performances of the famous Mariinsky Theater under the baton of Valery Gergiev, taking place on May 18 and 19. You won’t regret it!
Exhibition period: Friday, May 3 - Monday, May 20, 2013 from 10 am to 7 pm at the Rauchmühle
The Rauchmühle is also accessible for wheelchair users.
