1987

July 26 – August 31

A conflict about the freedom of art shakes up the Festival: George Tabori’s production of Franz Schmidt’s Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln [The Book of Seven Seals], which was to continue the tradition of oratorio performances at Kollegienkirche, is banned after its premiere. The clergy considers the drastic images created by the director to be incompatible with the consecrated church space, since the actions on stage violated religious dignity. The five remaining performances are presented as concert versions. Together with James Levine, Jean-Pierre Ponnelle prepares his last production for the Salzburg Festival: Arnold Schoenberg’s Moses und Aron. The team Johannes Schaaf and Horst Stein is represented with a new Abduction this summer; Karajan revives his Easter version of Don Giovanni with Samuel Ramey in the title role. Jürgen Flimm makes his Salzburg debut with a new production of Raimund’s Der Bauer als Millionär [The Farmer as Millionaire]. The Association of Friends of the Salzburg Festival and the press office find a new home in the Kapellhausstöckl on Mönchsberg, where they enjoy a wonderful view of the entire Festival district.
