1982

July 25 – August 30

Writer Peter Handke, who has taken up residence on Salzburg’s Mönchsberg, is represented in the drama program for the first time with a play: Wim Wenders, the movie director, is responsible for the world premiere of Handke’s Über die Dörfer [Through the Villages, or About the Villages]. Otto Schenk’s production of Der Zerrissene [The Torn Man] by Nestroy pays homage to Austrian tradition, Dieter Dorn’s interpretation of Goethe’s Tasso nods at classical heritage. A new Così fan tutte presents Riccardo Muti as a Mozart conductor and is directed by Michael Hampe in his Salzburg debut. As part of the city-wide opening party, a complete performance of Jedermann provides a free treat for the Salzburg population. The keynote address is delivered by a banker: Hermann J. Abs speaks on Patronage as an Obligation and a Source of Joy – the age of sponsoring, of private-public partnerships, has not yet dawned in Salzburg.
