1926

7–29 August

It was a year of new departures. The unsatisfactory temporary theatre was remodelled by Clemens Holzmeister, who added lateral galleries and improved the acoustics by covering the exposed roof timber in wood panelling. The entrance foyer was decorated with more than 200 frescoes by Anton Faistauer. The Winter Riding School, with Rottmayr and Lederwasch’s ceiling frescoes, opened its doors as an intermission foyer with a festive ball on 23 August. Equally important was the inauguration of a second theatre, the Summer Riding School (Felsenreitschule), with Max Reinhardt’s production of Goldoni’s Servant of Two Masters. For the first time a contemporary opera was performed: Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, conducted by Clemens Krauss. Three solo recitals formed another novelty in the Festival’s programme. Changes also occurred in the directorate: Baron Heinrich Puthon was appointed president, and the Festival was placed on a solid financial footing with the legal creation of a "Tourism Promotion Fund" for Salzburg province.
