The South African stage director Princess Zinzi Mhlongo is the winner of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Drama (2012) – an award of which she has always dreamed. However, Princess Zinzi Mhlongo is also internationally successful. At the Salzburg Festival, her piece Trapped
will be presented as part of the Montblanc and Salzburg Festival Young Directors Project.
It was a long way to reach this milestone success. “At my first audition, I had no idea what to do or what was expected of me. So I finally just presented myself the way I am.” In the meantime, however, she has changed sides and founded Tick Tock Productions. “It is very important for me to be leading a company, although I was unsure, after founding Tick Tock, which direction I could take. I wasn’t sure if I could really call myself a ‘director’. But the more recognition you receive and the more people comment on your work, the more it boosts your confidence. Ultimately, everybody must become independent sometime and find their own way.”
Her way leads her to the Salzburg Festival in 2012. Her production Trapped reflects her wish to tell her own stories. Trapped is about freedom – a freedom that Princess Zinzi Mhlongo often questions in the real world. Not so, however, inside the theater. “It is the informality that fascinates me about theater. You can only rely on what you have. What happens at that moment happens!”
The premiere of Trapped takes place on July 31 at 8:00 pm at republic.
