Zimmermann’s Opera "Die Soldaten" – Passions Far Removed from Full Dress Uniforms

Daniel Harding to conduct Ariadne auf Naxos instead of Riccardo Chailly

Because of health problems occurring over the past months, Riccardo Chailly’s doctors have advised him to take longer breaks between individual projects. The Salzburg Festival is happy to have engaged Daniel Harding, who led both Don Giovanni and Le nozze di Figaro at the Salzburg Festival during recent years, in Chailly’s stead as the conductor for the new production of Ariadne auf Naxos. However, Chailly will conduct the Gewandhaus Orchestra on August 30, 2012 in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 in A-Minor.

A Much-Desired Carmen

Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen is not only one of the most-performed, but also one of the most popular operas on the Salzburg program this coming summer. Gabrielle Dalton, the costume designer for this co-production with the Easter Festival, has been coming to Salzburg regularly during the past months to prepare the production. Faust I+II and an Alvis Hermanis Production at the Berlin Theatertreffen

The Salzburg Festival is pleased that Nicolas Stemann’s nine-hour production of Faust I + II, a 2011 co-production of the Salzburg Festival and the Thalia Theater Hamburg, has been invited to this year’s Theatertreffen in Berlin (May 4-20, 2012). The piece will be revived at the Berliner Festspiele – as one of the ten most remarkable productions of the season.

The Labyrinth under the Roof

Emanuel Schikaneder himself wrote a sequel for his masterwork Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), entitled Das Labyrinth oder Der Kampf mit den Elementen (The Labyrinth, or the Struggle with the Elements). Going back to the tradition of popular theater, this composition by Peter von Winter, which enjoyed enormous success at its time, will be presented during the coming Festival summer at the Residenzhof. Our trailer shows how this open-air production is weather-proofed.

The Salzburg Festival continues its successful cooperation with the Concert Association of the Vienna State Opera Chorus

The Concert Association of the Vienna State Opera Chorus has been appearing without interruption at the Salzburg Festival’s opera performances and concerts since 1923.  On December 13, two members of the Executive Committee of the Concert Association of the Vienna State Opera Chorus, Dr. Eliza Marian-Zurmann and Michael Knapp, as well as Festival president Dr. Helga Rabl-Stadler and Artistic Director Alexander Pereira signed a framework cooperation agreement for the coming five years.

The Salzburg Festival Mourns Sena Jurinac

“Sena Jurinac gave the Festival magic moments for which both audiences and critics celebrated her in equal measure” – with these words, Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler expressed her sadness at the passing of this wonderful singer. In Salzburg during the post-war period, she was among the artists who gave the Festival its outstanding international reputation.

This is the wonderful result of the fundraising campaign of the American Friends of the Salzburg Festival in New York. This project was taken on by the Salzburg Festival Society represented by Gerhard Andlinger and Isabelle Harnoncourt two months after the nomination of Artistic Director Alexander Pereira in 2009.
