A Musical Portrait: Marc Minkowski

This summer, the Salzburg Festival presents all three Da Ponte operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, directed by Claus Guth. The stage director will continue to develop his versions of the operas. Marc Minkowski and his orchestra Les Musiciens du Louvre • Grenoble will be responsible for the musical new production of Così fan tutte. Rainer Elstner has created a musical portrait of the Mozart interpreter Marc Minkowski, which also discusses Mozart’s “philosophical treatise on love, faithfulness, female simple-mindedness and male machismo, and the uprising of the serving classes”.

Enthusiastic Rehearsal Start for Macbeth

Right after his grand finale at Whitsun, Riccardo Muti has launched his next musical endeavor for the Salzburg Festival: yesterday (Tuesday) the first musical rehearsals for Verdi’s Macbeth took place. Together with director Peter Stein, this week will be dedicated to intensive rehearsals with the singers, marked by great enthusiasm on all sides.

Riccardo Muti Awarded Birgit Nilsson Prize 2011

The Swedish Birgit Nilsson Foundation has announced that conductor Riccardo Muti has been awarded the world’s highest cash prize in the music field: the Birgit Nilsson Prize 2011. In a first reaction, the conductor professed himself “deeply touched. For 40 years, Riccardo Muti has enjoyed a close cooperation with the Salzburg Festival. This year, he is one of the busiest artists of the Festival.

Christoph Marthaler is awarded Hans Reinhart Ring

The stage director and musician Christoph Marthaler will receive the highest award in Swiss theatrical life, the Hans Reinhart Ring, this year. He is being honored for the originality and international resonance of his work.
Leos Janáček’s opera The Makropulos Affair marks Christoph Marthaler’s sixth production for the Salzburg Festival.
