Mozart Children’s Orchestra of the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation
The Mozart Children’s Orchestra was founded within the framework of the children’s and youth programme of the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation in March 2012. This body of young players made its concert debut in the Great Hall of the Mozarteum on February 3, 2013 as part of that year’s Mozart Week Festival. It has become a regular part not only of the Mozart Week Festival but also of Salzburg’s cultural landscape.
This very special orchestra offers children and young people up to the age of twelve a wonderful opportunity to grow together as an ensemble and to show that they are more than capable of mastering the technical and musical demands of works by Mozart and other composers and of communicating their delight to audiences. The Mozart Children’s Orchestra is intended to motivate young musicians and encourage them to acquire a sense of musical commitment, at the same time offering them a unique opportunity to work together with international artists on the very highest level.
The fifty or so members of the Mozart Children’s Orchestra are selected by the music schools in Salzburg, Upper Austria and Bavaria that participate in the scheme as well as by an artistic team that comprises the director of the Mozart Children’s Orchestra, Christoph Koncz, and the individuals responsible for the different departments in the orchestra.
Such a project could not be realized unless it were embedded within the existing system whereby the students receive preparatory instruction on their various instruments, nor without close cooperation between the different music schools, especially the Salzburg Musikum, and the support of the teachers and parents.
The 2013 Salzburg Festival offered the Mozart Children’s Orchestra a very special opportunity to meet and work with the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional Infantil de Venezuela (El Sistema) for a joint public rehearsal – rarely has music’s ability to cross frontiers been as compellingly demonstrated as it was on this occasion.
The successful cooperation between the Salzburg Festival and the Mozarteum Foundation now has a wonderful sequel in the joint concert featuring both the Mozart Children’s Orchestra and the Salzburger Festspiele und Theater Kinderchor, a concert that the children in both groups are already looking forward to with tremendous anticipation.
