ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

The new children’s opera at the 2016 Salzburg Festival is based on motifs of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Henry Purcell’s The Fairy Queen and takes the young audience on a journey into the magical world of Titania, Queen of the Fairies.
Titania and the Fairy King Oberon are arguing which of them is a better magician. Their fight not only disturbs the action, but also seems to derail the entire performance.
It is only thanks to the forest spirit Puck that the fantastic story about magic and the theatrical art of transformation comes to a good end.
Inspired by Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, a so-called ‘masque’ combining poetry, music, dance, costumes and stage effects with courtly masquerade in 17th-century England, Salzburg’s children’s opera introduces youngsters to the world of Shakespeare and Purcell. The Fairy Queen in Salzburg, sung by members of the Young Singers Project, not only reveals the magical powers of musical theatre to children aged 6 and up, but also gives them a glimpse of the world ‘behind the scenes’.
