INFORMATION

The farewell is a new beginning: Peter Ruzicka, artistic director of the Salzburg Festival since 2001, ends his term of office on the last day of the festival in summer 2006. To round off the era he has consciously chosen works from the 21st century as a pointer to the future. New and very recent scores by Georges Aperghis, Matthias Pintscher and Helmut Lachenmann will be performed by the Klangforum Wien. Karlheinz Stockhausen will direct the German Symphony Orchestra of Berlin in the world premiere of his most recent opus, MIXTUR (2003), for five groups of instruments, four sinus generator players and four sound consoles. The finale on 31 August is entitled Symposion. As Sven Hartberger, who is planning the evening, explains, “The Klangforum Wien is following models from antiquity. When people came together in ancient times, they slowly and gracefully became inebriated. The purpose of the exercise must indeed have been the opening up of channels into one’s own self which remained closed when sober. We listen to intoxicating music of our time under the changing perceptive conditions of a restful intake of alcohol. Cushions, futons and comfortable seating form an installation that is randomly inhabited by the guests during the concert. In long intervals food and drink will be served. During a long night a transformation takes place from the Apollonian to the Dionysian world whereby borders become blurred and disappear”.
